Now that I have that out of the way, let me get into my review of Call Me Hunter by Jim Shockey.

I'm a hunter. I grew up watching hunting shows with my dad in the mid to late 80s and early 90s. I'm familiar with Jim Shockey, the outdoorsman and TV host.

This book has given Jim Shockey a new title in my mind - novelist. And not just any novelist, a damn good one.

I've read quite a few books in my 40 years and I don't remember one that I can compare to Call Me Hunter.

When I read the book jacket and saw the mention of priceless art and a psychopathic killer, I thought I was about to jump into some sort of Lara Croft-esque action thriller. I mean, the book is call Call Me Hunter.

What I got was something very different than my initial thought after reading the jacket. This book has depth and really reels you in and hooks you. There is action, but not as the main focal point.

Here comes the "spoiler."

The way Shockey tells this story is unique. The novel bounces from 2020 back to the 1950s, 1960s and 1990s. Through the first couple of chapters I wasn't sure how I was going to like the approach, but the further I got into the story the more I appreciated the way Shockey set his story up.

We see chapters that delve into one of the main characters past and then we get to see, in the next chapter, the other main character analyze that past and try to put the puzzle pieces together in an interesting and engaging way.

This book was extremely well written and keeps you turning the pages. The deeper I got j to the novel, the more I could see Shockey's personality (based on what I've seen on TV and heard in interviews) and personal experiences come out.

One thing Shockey does in his introduction is invites us to check some of his facts, particularly about people and items that are mentioned. I appreciate someone who does their research, and Shockey certainly put in the research time (I checked quite a few of the items in this story).

To be honest, I'm not sure I would have picked this book up if it hadn't gotten such rave reviews from bibliophiles I follow like Jack Carr and Ryan Steck (The Real Book Spy).

Man, I'm glad I did. This book was a pleasure to read and I truly hope there's a book two coming soon.

Do yourself a favor and and this book to the top of your reading list.
