This book has been on my reading list for a while. It was highly talked about by several social media accounts that I follow and I finally got around to reading it.
Without giving away too much, this novel follows a pilot who is given two choices. It seems tragedy will follow whichever choice he makes. The story unfolds around this.
Newman is a former flight attendant. This background gives her an upper hand when writing about protocols and procedures that take place on an airplane. Flight attendants are responsible for a lot more than the preflight safety briefing and handing out refreshments. Newman captures this eloquently and, more importantly, with an insider's knowledge that only comes from experience.
This book does not read like a debut novel. The way Newman lays out her story, gives background information on the major players and ties everything together is something that you are more likely to get from a second or third novel.
Newman's writing keeps you engaged. She keeps you wanting more. She gives us some unexpected moments that make you say, "Holy crap, I did not see that coming!"
I highly recommend this book and can't wait to jump into Newman's second novel, Drowning.
