Thrillers are by far my favorite genre to read. Jack Carr. Brad Thor. Vince Flynn. Kyle Mills. These, and those like them, are my go to. However, I’m a lover of books and venture into other genres on a fairly regular basis.
One of my favorite other genres is fantasy. I grew up reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. As I got older I read the Twilight saga, Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games books. Now that I’m even older, I’ve found a love of Stephen King, particularly The Dark Tower series.
When Netflix introduced The Witcher a few years ago, I jumped on board. I love Henry Cavill and the show looked pretty cool. It was right up my alley.
It wasn’t until halfway through season two did I realize that the show was based on a series of video games which were based on a series of books. I quickly added them to my list and, now here we are…
The Witcher: The Last Wish is a collection of stories that introduces readers to Geralt of Rivia, a mutant who is mostly human and whose main job is hunting monsters for a bounty.
This book was fun to read. It had plenty of action and magic and the things that I like about other fantasy books and series. I will say that you’re not going to get the high fantasy you expect from Tolkien or George R.R. Martin, but the first book of the series does deliver in the same vein, albeit with a smaller punch.
I can’t say what the series is like, yet, but I’m hopeful that Sapkowski builds on the characters and we get more development. If the show has any bearing (can’t believe I said that) then the rest of the bpons should be really good.
I do recommend this book to anyone that’s a fan of the fantasy genre.
